Wearing Sunblock Indoors? Why Dermatologists say it's important.
According dermatologists you should wear sunblock indoors. Why? If you're sitting near windows — or in front of a computer screen — you're exposing yourself to potentially skin-damaging light that will cause hyperpigmentation . There are three main reasons why experts say you should wear SPF indoors, all involving what you’re exposed to:
- Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays
- Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays
- Blue light from smart devices, computers and TVs
the blue light emitted from digital screens — including your computer, phone, tablet and TV — can affect your skin in two ways:
- Blue light can increase the production of melanin or pigmentation in the skin, which could lead to melasma, darkspots, age spot, and hyperpigmentation
- Blue light can also create free radicals, which might cause inflammation and lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastic tissue in the skin.
UV rays cause skin darkening by the way they affect the melanin in our skin. Melanin is a pigment in our skin produced by cells called melanocytes and is what gives our skin its color.
- UVA causes darkening by oxidating the melanin. Essentially, the melanin undergoes a chemical reaction after being exposed to UVA, causing it to become darker. When the melanin looks darker, the skin itself looks tanned and dark.
- UVB causes darkening by a different method. UVB causes an increase in the production of melanin in the skin and other changes to the cells that the melanin is stored in. These UVB effects cause the skin to become darker or tanned.
UVA induces immediate darkening and persistent pigment darkening through oxidation of pre-existing melanin or melanogenic precursors, while UVB induces delayed darkening which takes several days or longer to develop and requires activation of melanocytes.
It is best to use the Permanence Illuminate Fairtone Sunblock on a daily basis to prevent any skin darkening on your skin lightening journey.
